Here at Clayton Veterinary Associates, its not uncommon for us to deal with emergencies. Our location is just a few minutes down the road from the Gloucester County Animal Shelter - naturally we're the first place they turn in the case of an emergency.

Last week on July 26th, one of Gloucester County's animal control officers brought in an abandoned pitbull puppy that was knocking on death's door. The following is a quote from one of our veterinary assistants:

"Today a Gloucester county ACO came to our clinic with a 6 month old pitbull puppy flat out, too weak to pick up his head. He was covered with fleas to the point that his white skin was turned black and was crawling. Every single bone was sticking out and his bloodwork showed he should be dead already. We offered him food and he ate eagerly and proceeded to wag his tale to show his thanks even though he was too weak to move. By the end of his time with us we were able to sit him up and the bump above his shoulders is the fluids we gave him to try to combat his dehydration. This poor puppy was dumped and left to die and still might. I've never seen a worse case of animal abuse even on tv let alone with my own eyes."

We are happy to report that our new friend has been doing very well over the past 6 days. He is now able to stand on his own as well as hold down food.
